World Of Warcraft: Like a Bad Heroin Addiction

15 03 2008

Today, I re-subscribed to World of Warcraft. The popular game made by Blizzard entertainment, which more than 11 million people play online everyday with each other. So yea, incase you’re unfamiliar with World of Warcraft, the game is whats known as a MMORPG. A Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. Basically, the game allows you yo level up a character on either the horde or alliance factions. Each character has a race such as an Orc, a gender(that one is obvious) and a class such as a mage. The game allows you to play your character and quest to level up. As you do this, you can play with other players from around the world. Blizzard released an expansion for World of Warcraft in January of 2007 called The Burning Crusade. Blizzard’s next expansion is due outthis november, and is entitled Wrath of the Lich King

Heres the trailer for the oriinal version of the game to give you a better understanding:

Anyways, I re subscribed today. My friend I used to play with and I were talking about the game for a few hours, and it really brang back the addiction of “WoW”. I couldn’t stop thinking about playing the game over and over again. Which brings me to this blog. I thought I would briefly put my take on these MMORPGs. World of Warcraft is probably the most addicting thing besides booze I’ve come accross. Many people have lost their jobs, their wives, their families, and sometimes their lives. I happen to know somebody through the game that due to his extensive playing of the game, he lost his job and his wife divorced him. Yet, even after all of this, he continues to play WoW possibly even more than he did before. He doesn’t seem to care that its ruining his life, he know hes addicted, but just doesn’t give a shit.

wow nerdThis is what happens when you play too Much WoW.

Id compare World of Warcraft to heroin. Its enormously addictive once you get into it. If you’re lucky enough to quit, the urge to play will always be there. Odds are, you’re going to relapse at some point. I think Iv’e been playing World of Warcraft for close to a year and a half now, and I think Ive quit 3 times before. Obviously, as I stated I’m playing again. So that comes to 4 times Ive quit the game, and 4 times Ive just come crawling back.

Its all in good fun though I suppose, I don’t have much going on right now, so I suppose I can afford to play the game for awhile, at least until things start to pick up. So far, all thats been going on recently is that tommorow my house wont be free again. So that means no substance abuse, and no fucking my girlfriend over the kitchen counter. All good things must come to an end as they say. St. Patty’s day is coming up on Monday (?) so that should be a drunken good time.

Also, in movie news, I recently saw The Insider starring Russel Crowe and Al Pacino and written and directed by Michael Mann. This film was nominated for 7 academy awards including ‘Best Picture’ at the 2000 Oscar Awards. The movie I thought was really well done and for those of you who haven’t seen it yet, its on my list of recomendations, so get out there and check it out.

My girlfriend is sleeping softly beside me here in my bed, and knowing its 4am, I know that I shoud work on getting some sleep as well. Ill catch you guys later, have a good one.

Oh, and watch this:
